Organisers of the Perth International golf tournament today announced the first players of the 2014 field, including 2013 US PGA champion and world number 16, Jason Dufner.
Tourism Minister Liza Harvey welcomed the announcement saying this year’s event would play an important role in helping the State Government promote and talk up Western Australia as a tourist destination, nationally and internationally.
“Last year’s tournament was a great success. It attracted more than 31,000 spectators and around 2,379 hours of television coverage was transmitted into 473 million homes in 46 countries, providing priceless media exposure for Western Australia,” Mrs Harvey said.
“Events such as the Perth International form an important part of the State Government’s strategy to increase the value of tourism to $12billion by 2020, promoting the State to international television audiences and helping to attract visitors who inject billions of dollars into the economy.”
Along with Jason Dufner, the Minister confirmed several other key golfers would play in the tournament, including rising French star and European Tour number five Victor Dubuisson, 2013 Perth International defending champion Jin Jeong from South Korea, as well as Perth’s own Brett Rumford and fellow Australian Steven Bowditch.
“Jason Dufner was crowned the 2013 US PGA champion and was a US team representative in last year’s President’s Cup and the 2012 Ryder Cup. It is fantastic to see him return to WA after finishing second in the inaugural Perth International two years ago,” Mrs Harvey said.
“The 2014 Perth International at Lake Karrinyup Country Club in October is shaping up to be a real drawcard for golf fans and sports lovers.”
The Perth International, Australia’s richest golf tournament and the only Australian event to be co-sanctioned by both the European Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia, is proudly supported by the State Government through Tourism WA.
